At each and every level of potential action, it is critical to stay focused. Particularly at an individual level, less may be more. A useful mantra is: "Pick one issue, take one action and encourage others to do the same."

A potential list of actions consistent with a more responsible model of strategy and behavior would include:

• Set targets for acceptable performance and measure progress publicly and honestly
• Apply business principles, priorities and approaches to initiatives for social responsibility
• Provide leadership to bring together private and public sectors to back key initiatives
• Concentrate on need for broad social change to ensure future business performance
• Participate in joint public/private sector drive to action

• Review each stage of strategy to explore opportunities for greater engagement in programs of social responsibility
• Adopt triple bottom line accounting
• Review internal values and operations to ensure alignment with desired outcomes
• Join support for Pew Center's program on global warming, the UN's recent program on public/private sector initiative, the anti-corruption drive of Transparency International, and adopt intergenerational accounting

• Raise opportunities for positive engagements like the Rotary Club's Polio Plus program
• Join forces with GAVI or other similar initiatives
• Contribute set percentage of revenues to selected charities
• Create a forum for change, such as Doctors without Borders, to address critical challenges in developing markets using unique skills of the members

• Contribute your time to a simple and focused activity
• Initiate a program of social responsibility in your company
• Contribute financially to a charity of your choice
